Legendary comedienne Joan Rivers died on Thursday, Sept. 4, her daughter Melissa Rivers confirmed to several news outlets. She was 81. Exactly one week ago, Rivers was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City after she stopped breathing during a minor throat procedure.
According to reports, she was undergoing surgery on her vocal chords at a NYC clinic when she went into cardiac and respiratory arrest. The comedienne was immediately taken to Mount Sinai where doctors placed her in a medically-induced coma.
"It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers," Melissa said in a statement (via Page Six). "She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother. Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated. My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon."
On Wednesday, Rivers was moved from intensive care to a private room while doctors assessed her condition. Melissa released a statement at the time and said that her mother was "being kept comfortable" but didn't provide further details.
According to Page Six, a funeral for Rivers will take place Sunday (Sept. 7) at Temple Emanu-El in New York City.
"It is a terribly sad day for all of us. We mourn with her family, friends and all those millions to whom she brought laughter and joy," Rabbi Joshua M. Davidson said in a statement, the site reports.
