'Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' Sequel: David Fincher Has A Script Ready For Possible 'Girl Who Played With Fire' Movie

Director David Fincher has a script ready for the sequel to "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," and he hopes he'll have the opportunity to tell the story.

During an interview with Swedish site Afton Bladet (via Film Divider), the director explained the possibility of a sequel still exits. The first film adapted from the Millennium trilogy grossed more than $232 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

Film Divider reports the movie didn't do as well financially as Sony Pictures would have liked due to its massive $90 million budget. However, Sony has already purchased the rights to the film.

"I think because it [Sony] already has spent millions of dollars on the rights and the script ... it will result in something," Fincher told Afton Bladet. "The script that we now [has] huge potential, I can reveal as much as it is extremely different from the book."

Actress Rooney Mara would be on board if there is a sequel to "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." Mara, who played Lisbeth Salander in the first film, spoke to MTV News back in 2013 about the franchise. The actress claimed she would "love" to play Lisbeth again, even if Fincher didn't sign on as the director.

"Well, people always ask me that," Mara told MTV. "I wouldn't have a choice, contractually. I have to do it no matter whether you [points to interviewer] directed it. Obviously, we all worked on the film together for a year.

"And like for this movie ['Ain't Them Bodies Saints'], we worked for three weeks, and we were like a family by the end of it, and we got so close. So imagine a year of that. It would be hard to have someone new come in. I would certainly be very sad. I love the character so much. I'd love to do it, but of course, I'd be sad if it wasn't David."
