William Shatner’s return to the “Star Trek” franchise is highly unlikely. Rumors surfaced this week regarding William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy possibly returning to the franchise to reprise their respective roles as Captain James T. Kirk and Spock.
“Star Trek 3” director Robert Orci reportedly commented on fan site TrekMovie that he refused to respond to the rumors.
“Not in my interest to confirm or deny anything because it limits my options while maintaining my integrity as a truth teller,” Orci wrote, according to TrekMovie. “The movie is not the movie [until] it is in the theater. Until then, everything is a rumor.”
Shatner himself also took to his Twitter account to reiterate he currently has no involvement in the “Star Trek” franchise.
“Let's talk ST. I don't know anything about the current gossip. Nobody has contacted me. Right now it's just rhetoric to cause hype,” Shatner wrote.
The official “Star Trek” camp has yet to comment on the situation, but rumors regarding the film are still spreading like wildfire. TrekMovie also recently reported alleged plot spoilers for “Star Trek 3," claiming the film will take place five years from the end of “Star Trek Into Darkness.”
“A source also tells TrekMovie that Earth will not play a significant role in the movie, unlike the previous two films,” according to TrekMovie. “This is consistent with previous on-the-record comments from Orci, specifically how the film will delve into ‘uncharted territories’ of ‘deep space’ and deal with ‘new discoveries,’ also hinting it will include new alien species.”
“Star Trek 3” is rumored to hit theaters Summer 2016. What do you think about the Shatner and Nimoy rumors? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
