During season five, the High Septon is expected to be the one who seals Cersei Lannister’s fate.
In “A Dance with Dragons,” Cersei plots to get rid of Margarey Tyrell by getting someone to accuse her of infidelity against her husband, King Tommen. Cersei sees Margarey as a threat as she has the ability to manipulate Tommen.
However, Cersei’s plans backfires as the High Septon’s investigation reveals secrets she wanted to keep hidden. Margarey is released from custody and Cersei faces a difficult situation.
In order to escape a worse punishment, Cersei admits to the lesser crimes and is sentenced by the High Septon. Cersei must complete a penance walk in order to atone for her sins and crimes.
Cersei is stripped naked, shaved of her hair and forced to walk along the streets of King’s Landing for all to gawk at her. During the penance walk, Cersei realizes how alone she is and the only person she has in the city is her son Tommen.
The Queen Regent attempts to stay strong and complete the walk for Tommen, knowing he still cares for her and would be there after she completes her atonement.
As for what happens to Cersei after the walk is still up for speculation. George R.R. Martin will likely address the direction of Cersei’s fate during the sixth installment of the “A Song of Fire and Ice” saga, “Winds Of Winter.”
