George R.R. Martin has revealed what he believes it the most outrageous fan theory he’s heard to date.
During an interview with The Huffington Post, Martin wanted to put to rest one theory that has been picking away at him since the popularity of his “A Song of Fire and Ice” saga skyrocketed.
"From my point of view, the craziest one is the people who believe that I've actually finished all of the books, and I'm just sitting on them for some reason in order to get more money or increase the value, you know, to release them at an appropriate point," Martin said. "That's a pretty crazy one, but there seem to be people who actually believe that."
Martin is currently in the process of writing his sixth novel, “Winds of Winter.” The author recently attended Santa Fe Independent Film Festival where he explained to the panel crowd why his progress has been particularly slow for the sixth book.
"Writer's block isn't to blame here, it's distraction. In recent years, all of the work I've been doing creates problems because it creates distraction,” Martin explained. “Because the books and the show are so popular I have interviews to do constantly. I have travel plans constantly. It's like suddenly I get invited to travel to South Africa or Dubai, and who's passing up a free trip to Dubai?”
“I don't write when I travel. I don't write in hotel rooms. I don't write on airplanes. I really have to be in my own house undisturbed to write. Through most of my life nobody did bother me, but now everyone bothers me every day. I have assistants and minions whose main job is to make sure people don't bother me so I can actually get writing done."
Martin has yet to announce a release date for "Winds of Winter," but the fifth season of HBO's "Game of Thrones" will premiere some time in 2015.
