“Assassin’s Creed: Unity” features the iconic architecture found in the streets of Paris and it was no easy task to recreate the landmarks.
Caroline Miousse, senior level artist on “Assassin’s Creed: Unity,” recently spoke to UbiBlog about recreating the Parisian skyline for the title, which required the team to extensively research the history.
“We were able to find a lot of blueprints showing us exactly how Notre Dame was constructed,” Miouse said. “[Maxime Durand, Assassin’s Creed Historian] helped me a lot with it because he has the historical background. I have tons of books, too. Google was also my best friend for a while. You can just find so much stuff on the Internet now.”
“But it also really just helped me a lot to talk to people. It’s very difficult to take a big picture of Notre Dame and capture every single detail. You really have to take a bunch of pictures of everything and put them all together like a puzzle.”
It wasn’t enough for Miousse to make sure the development nailed the architecture in a historical context. The level artist wanted recreate the atmosphere of what is was like to be around the Eiffel Tower and The Louvre during the French Revolution.
“I can re-create every single little detail of Notre Dame, but I also want to talk to people who have been there so I can know what it’s supposed to feel like,” she said. “That’s a very important part of making sure I do it justice – getting players to feel the right emotions when they see it in the game.”
