Joseph Gordon-Levitt was tapped to take on the role of Edward Snowden in an Oliver Stone movie based on the NSA whistleblower’s story.
Reuters reports the film will begin production in January, but does not has a set release date. The film will based off of two novels: "The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man" by Luke Harding and "Time of the Octopus" by Anatoly Kucherena.
Gordon is best known for his roles in “Inception” and “The Dark Knight Rises,” but also starred in “Don Jon,” a film he produced with the help of his production company Hit Record.
The Snowden film will also be “independently” funded, according to producer Moritz Borman. The produce released a statement to Reuters claiming "this film needs an independent in the true sense, where political pressures will not come into play."
Snowden fled the United States after revealing the United States was reportedly spying on its citizens and released official documents to provide evidence of his allegations.
Snowden is wanted by the United States for “theft of government property, unauthorized communication of national defense information and wilful communication of classified intelligence to an unauthorized person,” according to Reuters.
He is currently living in Moscow after Russia granted him asylum and a three-year resident permit in August 2014.
