Aaron Hernandez will remain in solitary confinement for his own safety. The former New England Patriots player is in danger and the isolation is in his "best interest," TMZ reports.
Hernandez has been in solitary confinement since the beginning of July, shortly after his arrest on June 26. Hernandez, who is an inmate at the Bristol County Jail, is believed to be in danger among the general population. Because of the ex-NFL star's high profile, other inmates may view him as a "prize" and be more inclined to harm him.
After initially placing the 23-year-old in solitary confinement, Bristol County Jail officials said they would review Hernandez's situation later in the month. Officials did meet and decided it to be in his "best interest" to remain out of the general population.
Despite the circumstances, officials said Hernandez is "doing well" and not causing any problems. He's also not completely isolated.
"He has been getting visitors but we do not give out who is visiting him ... but people do come regularly," a representative of the jail told TMZ.
Hernandez is being held without bail as he awaits trial on charges of murder and five gun-related offenses. Prosecutors claim Hernandez orchestrated and executed a plan to murder Odin Lloyd, whose body was found last month a mile away from Hernandez's Massachusetts home.
