It appears that Verizon Wireless is now taking the microphone to unveil a new bit of technology, this time in the form of a new smartphone.
The nation's largest cell phone carrier and provider has sent out invitations to a press event on July 23 where it will show off "the next generation of their most popular family of devices."
Like most invitations to major unveiling events like this, the initial notice was very light on specific details. That has caused many to begin open speculation as to what the company has in store for users on July 23. The consensus among industry insiders is that the event will showcase the next generation round of Droid smartphones. For the past few weeks the rumor mill has been buzzing with a lot of Motorola Droid phones. It is likely these will be what Verizon Wireless decides to show off to consumers in the hopes of becoming competitive with the very lucrative smartphone market.
According to CNET, the rumors particularly center around the Droid Ultra family of phones, a successor to the Droid Razr line of products the company launched last year.
Verizon Wireless has been downplaying its momentum over the past few months of the year by letting the iPhone and Galaxy S4 franchises propel its sales. It has said the HTC One will be in its repetoir soon but has given no specifics as to when. It announced the Nokia Lumia 928 with a simply tweet and has been rumored to be putting the Moto X alongside its Droid family. Given its recent reputation of keeping things low-key with big announcements, it's hard to gage just what it deems big enough to merit a press event.
In attendance at the event will be Verizon marketing executive Jeff Dietel. The event will be held at the Lincoln Center Plaza in Manhattan. As of right now, the company has not said if the event will be live streamed to the public or not. It is likely that it will be as events like this don't typically get a live stream site until the event draws closer.
