Paula Deen fans are getting creative in an attempt to get even with companies that dropped the infamous chef following the racism scandal that derailed her career last month.
According to CNN, a new campaign is encouraging fans to send empty butter wrappers to companies that cut their connection with Deen, who was known for her love of the greasy baking ingredient.
Wal-mart, K-Mart, Sears, QVC and the Food Network are among the franchises that have reportedly received wrappers. The campaign was started by Indianapolis fan John Schmitt, who also runs the Facebook page "We Support Paul Dean." The page boasts 600,000 likes.
"People on the page are a lot like me," Schmitt told CNN. "They support Paula and who she is as a person."
"She made a mistake 20 years ago. We all makes mistakes," Schmitt also said of his decision to defend Deen and start the campaign. "I've said things I regret."
Schmitt said that the idea for the empty-wrapper movement was inspired by an interesting metaphor.
"I said, 'You know this is actually perfect.' The butter itself is Paula, and these wrappers are void of butter just like these companies are void of Paula," he explained. This led to the creation of the campaigns slogan: "A corporation without Paula Deen is like a butter wrapper without butter."
The push comes one month after Deen was dropped by more than 12 companies that were upset by her admission to past use of the N-word and racist jokes. Aside from one highly publicized "TODAY Show" appearance, Deen has remained quiet since the scandal and has reportedly fired her legal team and her agent.
As far as the future of the butter campaign, Schmitt says he has not received a personal response from any company but will continue to participate as a form of self-expression.
