It's a boy! Kate Middleton gave birth to a baby boy at 4:24 p.m., CNN reports. The royal baby boy weighed in at 8 pounds, 6 ounces.
A name hasn't been released yet but the most popular rumored names have been George and James. Other names mentioned have been John, Charles, Philip and Edward.
"You have to remember they are naming the future king or queen. So you won't want to see something silly, like Queen Suri, which would be fine if you are playing dress-up, but it is not quite appropriate for when you are the queen of 16 nations," Victoria Arbiter, ABC royal contributor told E! News. "They are going to be very careful when naming their child, so we will something traditional."
The Palace announced earlier in the month that the title for the baby would His or Her Royal Highness Prince or Princess (the baby's name) of Cambridge. The child will be third in line for the throne which is occupied now by Queen Elizabeth. Following the Queen will be her son Charles and his son, William.
The Palace announced the news by placing a notice on a wooden easel right outside of Buckingham Palace and also posted the news on Twitter. They said mom and baby are doing fine and both will stay in the hospital overnight.
"Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well," the announcement read.
"Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine, and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy," Prince Charles and wife Camilla said in a statement.
Prior to the announcement a crier shouted the news outside the hospital, US Weekly reports.
"May he be long-lived, happy, and glorious, and one day reign over us!" God save the Queen!"
According to protocol the first to learn of the baby's birth would have been Queen Elizabeth II, Prime Minister David Cameron and the governors general of each of the Commonwealth nations, along with the rest of both families. As expected the name of the baby boy has not been released yet. CNN royal correspondent, Max Foster said the news of the child's name could be announced once the family leaves the hospital and return home. It took a few days before Prince William's name was revealed and Prince Harry's name was announced as the family was leaving the hospital.
According to a Palace Aide, the world might be getting royal baby pictures sooner than later. The aide promises that once the new parents leave the hospital they "will pose for baby pictures."
