San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said cornerback Eric Wright will no longer become a member of the team due to a failed physical, according ESPN.com. Wright was supposed to join the 49ers due to a trade between the NFC champs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Instead a league sources said the Buccaneers are now working to release the 27-year old cornerback. The Bucs had agreed to give the 49ers a conditional 2014 draft pick in exchange for Wright.
The UNLV product was not on the best of terms with Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano and general manager Mark Dominick after he was charged on July 12 with misdemeanor DUI.
Currently, there is no confirmation as to why Wright did not pass the physical. According to NFL.com, a contributing factor to the failing grade could be his Achillies injury suffered in 2012.
He also served a suspension last season for using performance-enhancing drugs.
According to NFL.com’s Greg Rosenthal, if Wright had made the team he would have competed with Nnamdi Asomugha for a spot on the roster.
However, it doesn’t seem they would have started at either cornerback position.
The 49ers will be trying to make it back to the Super Bowl this season, after losing to the Baltimore Ravens 34-31 in Super Bowl XLVII. They lost on a touchdown late which some believed controversial since it appeared there was pass interference on the play.
The 49ers will play their first preseason game against the Denver Broncos on August 8 at 9:00 p.m. EDT.
