Green Bay Packers receiver Jordy Nelson underwent knee surgery on Monday and will miss the entire preseason. The surgery was intended to fix a nerve problem in his knee, and he could be back for the season opener, NFL.com reports.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy announced on Tuesday that Nelson underwent surgery and would miss the preseason. McCarthy said he was "hopeful" Nelson would be available for Week 1, but added he's hopeful about all of his injured players.
Nelson, 28, underwent surgery to fix an old nerve issue in his knee, which he's dealt with sporadically since playing at Kansas State. Nelson and the team hope that tackling the knee issue now will save them from having to deal with it later in the season.
Nelson was one of Rodger's favorite targets last season, recording 49 receptions for 745 yards and seven touchdowns.
With the loss of Greg Jennings during free agency and Nelson now recovering from surgery, quarterback Aaron Rodgers will have to rely on Randall Cobb, James Jones and Jermichael Finley to move the chains.
Green Bay also lost left tackle Bryan Bulaga for the season. Bulaga, a crucial piece to the offensive line, tore his ACL during Saturday's team scrimmage and will miss the entire 2013 season.
Rookie tackle David Bakhtiari will start at left tackle, according to NFL.com. Bakhtiari, a fourth-round pick out of Colorado, has looked good during training camp and appeared poised when facing Green Bay's best rusher, Clay Matthews.
Green Bay also added depth to the quarterback position on Tuesday by signing Vince Young. The former 2006 Offensive Rookie of the Year was unemployed last season, but is set to compete against Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman for the team's backup spot behind Rodgers.
