'Thor: The Dark World' Trailer: Loki Shines as Reluctant Sidekick In Marvels Gritty Sequel (TRAILER)

The new trailer for the next installment in Marvel's pre Avengers 2 Phase 2 "Thor: The Dark World" features a lot more plot details than the previous teaser. The real start of the trailer though is not the Hammer wielding protector of earth but rather his brother Loki, the main villain from the first Thor film as well as the Avengers.

In the second film, Loki has been locked away as a result of his actions in the Avengers where he opened an inter dimensional portal and set an army of aliens loose on the city of Manhattan. However, his knowledge of the Nine World's underground puts him in a position to parter with Thor to take down the new threat presented by the dark elves led by Malekith the Accursed, played by Chirstopher Eccleston.

It isn't revealed how Thor convinces Loki to help Asguard, only that he convinces Loki to help. From there the trailer shows several of Thors old warrior companions including Sif (Jaimie Alexander) and Volstagg (Ray Stevenson) who each threaten Loki with death in the event he finds a way to betray Thor again. Even Loki has to admit he's an odd choice for the job: "You must be truly desperate to come to me for help," he says.

None of the jabs at the former villain turned reluctant side kick compare to Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) when she gives the demigod a huge smack in the face.

"That was for New York," she says.

Tom Hiddleston shines even in the trailer as the fan-favorite super villain. He flashes a crooked smile after his encounter with Foster and simply says "I like her."

The reason Foster is within face-smacking distance of Loki is because The Black Ark known as the Fist of Malekith is seen ripping through the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwhich, England, according to Entertainment Weekly. Thor arrives to take his earthly crush from the first film to safety.

The film, directed by Game of Thrones' Alan Taylor, is out November 8. The director is hoping to bring a bit more darkness and grit to the role. This is a pattern seen in all of the Phase 2 movies so far. "Thor: The Dark World" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" each hold ominous connotations to more high stakes villains and "Iron Man 3" saw Tony Stark dealing with a new breed of villain that his suits couldn't handle alone as well as PTSD from what was called "The Battle of New York."
