YouTube Co-Creator Debut 'MixBit' Video-Stitching App With No Length Limit And Ability To Reuse All Video

What do Vine and Instagram Video both have in common? Limits to the size of videos. With Vine capping all clips at six seconds and Instagram Video capping them at 15, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen, co-founders of YouTube, have said "enough."

That's why the two created MixBit, a free video-stitching app that lets its users shoot short video clips and put them all together to create lengthier videos. How does this differ from Vine and Instagram Video? Simple, the videos made can be as short as a one second or as long as an hour. The only limitations are that each video clip can be no longer than 16 seconds, and each video can only contain up to 256 clips. Not only can each individual clip be longer than an Instagram Video, the clips can be strung together to great lengthier projects.

Another feature that makes MixBit more exciting than Vine and Instagram Video is the fact that it is designed for the editor, not the cameraman. What this means is, any clips uploaded to MixBit can be used by any other MixBit user in their videos. The hope is that this will ramp up the social aspect of the app.

Users can edit their videos by moving or deleting each clip from their device. Once the final product is made, you can save it or publish it to the MixBit Web site, which is slated to ramp up sometime Thursday, according to CNET. Users can freely borrow clips from other MixBit users to add to your own video. As a result, users aren't forced to create their own content if they want to use the app and edit a beautiful video. Videos can simply be a remix of other content from MixBit users.

"The whole purpose of MixBit is to reuse the content within the system," Hurley told the New York Times. "I really want to focus on great stories that people can tell."

The app is available Thursday via the iOS App Store. An Android version is due out sometime in the next several weeks.
