Texas Senator Ted Cruz apologized on Wednesday for making a joke about Vice President Joe Biden, whose son died on Saturday.
During a GOP dinner in Michigan, Cruz took some jabs at Democrats and trotted out an old line he has used since about 2013. "You know, Vice President Joe Biden," he said, according to Michigan Live. "You know the nice thing. You don't need a punchline. I promise you it works. At the next party you're at, just walk up to someone and say, 'Vice President Joe Biden,' and just close your mouth. They will crack up laughing."
A reporter from The Detroit News asked Cruz about the comments after the speech, but according to the paper, Cruz just turned and walked away. Social media users didn't let him off that lightly, prompting Cruz to take to Facebook and then Twitter to apologize.
"It was a mistake to use an old joke about Vice President Biden during his time of grief, and I sincerely apologize," Cruz wrote on Facebook. "The loss of his son is heartbreaking and tragic, and our prayers are very much with the Vice President and his family."
