Convicted murderer Richard Matt, who escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility earlier this month, was shot and killed on Friday, according to The New York Times.
A border control tactical team that has been involved in the search since day one (June 6) killed Matt at around 3:45 p.m., CNN reports.
The location of David Sweat, who escaped from the prison along with Matt, is still unknown, but police are in "hot pursuit" of him, according to CNN.
Matt and Sweat's location was tipped off to police after a man who lives three miles from Malone, N.Y. noticed a spilled liquor bottle in his cabin. The pair of inmates then attempted to carjack a person with a shotgun they found at a nearby cabin earlier in the day, CBS reports.
Matt shot at the driver of the camper they were trying to steal, who was then able to call 911, according to CNN.
In total, 1,100 officers have been involved in the search for Matt and Sweat.
The Daily Beast was the first to report that Matt had been shot by law enforcement.
Prior to the shooting, The New York Times reported that Matt and Sweat were heading towards Canada.
"We have developed evidence in our search area that the suspects may be headed toward Canada," Charles Guess of the New York State Police said. "That evidence is still being investigated by our laboratory. But based upon what we know at this point we have a high degree of confidence in our conclusion."
"As we have said from Day 1, we presume they are armed and dangerous," he said.
