‘Batman V Superman’ RUMORS: Joker Kills Robin; Connects to 'Suicide Squad?'

Warning: The following contains possible spoilers for "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice."

San Diego Comic-Con 2015 wrapped up this past weekend and it left movie fans with Easter Eggs galore! Specifically, the new trailer for "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" had lots of juicy tidbits.

For the longest time it was rumored that Jared Leto's Joker would have some type of role in "Batman V Superman." It was also rumored that the Joker and the Caped Crusader already had a long and tragic history with one another well before the movie gets underway. Well, the trailer seems to have confirmed that with one simple image.

If you'll notice, that isn't a Batman suit. It's a Robin outfit. That means at some point in the past, Ben Affleck's Batman did have a partner (either Jason Todd or Dick Grayson most likely). Based on the picture, in which the Joker has left Batman an ominous message, one can safely assume that Batman's most infamous foe has killed Robin at some point before next year's "Batman V Superman" and "Suicide Squad" take place.

This would help explain why Affleck's version of Batman is a weathered, grizzled vigilante veteran who is semi-retired and seemingly at the end of his rope. He is heartbroken and guilty over the loss of his former protégé at the hands of the Joker. This would also help lay the groundwork for the conflict between the Clown Prince of Crime and the Dark Knight, which may possibly take center stage in 2017's solo flick "The Batman" to be directed and co-written by Affleck himself.

It seems clear that Warner Bros. is making a concentrated effort to laterally connect their films in the growing DC Cinematic Universe as major characters and story lines from one film crossover into others.

This is all just speculation at this point, but it seems pretty plausible once you connect the dots.

"Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" will hit theaters on March 25, 2016.
