Actress and comedian Amy Schumer has joined her cousin, New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, to push for laws that crack down on gun violence. The "Trainwreck" star made a teary-eyed call for stringent gun control laws at a press conference on Monday in New York that was scheduled to introduce the senator's three-part legislative gun control plan, according to The Huffington Post.
"Unless something is done and done soon, dangerous people will continue to get their hands on guns," the comic said.
On July 23, a gunman killed two people and wounded nine others after he opened fire during a screening of the movie "Trainwreck," in Lafayette, La., as HNGN previously reported.
"We need a background check system without holes and fatal flaws," she said. "We need one with accurate information that protects us like a firewall. The critics scoff and say, 'Well, there's no way to stop crazy people from doing crazy things,' but they're wrong. There is a way to stop them. Preventing dangerous people from getting guns is very possible. We have common-sense solutions. We can toughen background checks and stop the sale of firearms to folks who have a violent history or history of mental illness," according to Time.
Sen. Schumer's proposed legislation would incentivize states to share information and records on felons, domestic abusers and dangerous mentally ill persons and penalize states that don't, to increase funding for mental health treatment as well as funding for substance abuse programs.
