'Deadliest Catch' Captain Tony Lara Dies At 50, Cause Of Death Unknown

Tony Lara, who appeared as a ship captain on Discovery Channel's television show "Deadliest Catch," has died in Sturgis, S.D., during its famous motorcycle rally, according to authorities, The Associated Press reported.

Meade County Sheriff Ron Merwin said the cause of death is unknown and is awaiting autopsy results to determine the reason behind the death of the 50-year-old. The sheriff added that Lara passed away early Saturday morning at a private residence in Sturgis.

Lara was a veteran crab catcher who joined the cast of the show many years ago after the death of Phil Harris in 2010. Like Harris, Lara was at the helm of a boat called the Cornelia Marie and worked with Harris' son Josh in commercial crab fishing out of Kodiak, Alaska, The Wrap reported.

Lara's death comes two weeks after the reality show's producer Joe McMahon was shot and killed by a gunman who then committed suicide, as HNGN previously reported.
