Crying Baby Found Locked In Hotel Safe In Niagara Falls, Police On Hunt For Parents

A crying baby was found locked inside a safe in a hotel in Niagara Falls in Canada Tuesday morning, and the police are on the hunt for the infant's family.

The parents, from Brooklyn, N.Y., immediately called the staff at the Howard Johnson Hotel to free the baby. It took the staff 20 minutes to get the baby out, according to USA Today.

The baby was "alert and crying," throughout the entire incident. However, the parents immediately left the scene, bringing the baby along with them after it was freed before the police arrived and were told what had happened.

It remains unclear as to how the baby ended up inside the safe in the first place. "At this point we don't know if it's anything more than a preventable accident," said Det.-Const. Amanda Sanders, of Niagara regional police's child abuse unit.

Sanders added that the police think that the baby is small enough to fit in the safe and is less than a year old. The safe is 50 centimeters wide, 35 centimeters tall and 43 centimeters deep, CBC News Canada reported.

Meanwhile, Cheech Unelli, a parking attendant who works across the street from the hotel, revealed that an employee he knows "overheard the wife giving the husband hell."

"That's when they decided they better leave," he said.

"We are not anticipating charges at the time. But we need to speak to the family to answer questions and ensure the welfare of the infant. There is no information on how the baby ended up locked in the safe," said Detective Sgt. Scott Kraushar of the Niagara Regional Police's child abuse unit, according to the New York Daily News.
