One of Mayor Bill De Blasio's security detail was shot outside Gracie Mansion Sunday night, according to The Observer. The police officer was hit in the back by what seemed to be a pellet gun. The officer was taken for treatment to Lenox Hospital. She was released after being treated for minor injuries. The mayor was not at the mansion at the time.
Michael Verbitsky, 19, has been arrested in connection to the shooting. He is being charged with several crimes, including assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon. Police say there have been other incidents of a pellet gun being used in the area, The Observer reported. Verbitsky is believed to be linked to this pellet gun crime spree.
The shooting took place around 7:15 pm Sunday night, at the mayor's official New York residence in Manhattan. The officer who was hit was getting out of a car at the time of the shooting, according to The New York Times.
Verbitsky lives across the street from the mayoral residence. When questioned by police, he said he was aiming at the park when he fired, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Bill De Blasio has been the Mayor of New York City since Jan. 1, 2014.
