Parents on social media have raised concerns about small particles they're finding in Huggies wipes and the fear is spreading. More parents are expressing themselves on social media over claims from Huggies that everything is safe, according to USA Today.
It seems to have started with one mother, who uploaded a video of what appeared to be glass on her baby wipes. Huggies says the shiny particles are not harmful and they are not glass. The shiny specks are the result of the fibers combining together.
"It is important to note that no glass is used during the manufacture of our wipes," Huggies parent company Kimberly-Clark said in a statement, USA Today reported. "Based on the findings of the independent testing, we are confident that our product is safe and poses no health risk to babies, so there are no plans to remove this product from the market."
Huggies has stated that only microfibers are used to make their baby wipes. There is no glass or fiberglass in them at all. The sparkling particles are simply a reflection of the light on the fibers.
"I was told by the customer representative is they have no idea what it is and they have had no moms send in their wipes. All of these moms are keeping their wipes because they're expecting a lawsuit on their hands and don't want to give Huggies all of the evidence," mom Kelsea Andrews said, according to WTSP News.
She believed the shiny specks are a type of polypropylene plastic. "These shiny specks, they come off on your hands. It's a prickly sensation and it feels like it's digging into your skin," Andrews said.
Huggies says that the wipes are safe and has no plans to issue a recall, according to The Consumerist.
