Rainbow hair color is so last season and in its place, a subtle hair color trend is emerging. It has similar multicolor-style as its predecessor, but instead of bright streaks, the blend of pinks, purples, greens and blues are subdued.
The new hair color is called opal hair that follows the gem's hues, according to Buzzfeed. It's also described as the muted version of sand art hair, making the colorful look easier to wear.
To achieve this hair style, the hair is first bleached in a pearl hue. "It could either be prelightened to a platinum or pale yellow or it can be painted with heavy highlights and prelightened that way," according to professional colorist Aura Friendman from Sally Hershberger, via Popsugar.
"For me an opal or any iridescent color has these nuances of color with very subtle hints of the greens and the pinks. It's not a 'come and slap you in the face' kind of color," she added. "It reflects a different color every which way you look at it. If you tilt it one way you see more of the pink, and if you tilt it another way you see more of the green."
The opal hair trend may also be worn on darker hair if people don't want to get their hair bleached. "You don't have to lighten it so much to get it there, so your hair will be in better condition," Friedman said in a separate Popsugar interview.
