Iran Nuclear Deal Has Enough Democratic Backing

There are enough senators in support of the Iran Nuclear Deal to block the Republican votes against the agreement, according to The Wall Street Journal. It will pass against the wishes of the Republicans.

Congress returned from recess on Tuesday and announcements from a handful of Democratic senators brought the total number of supporters to 41. The House is expected to disapprove the resolution this week.

Even when they do, the deal will go through. The Democrats have enough votes to sustain a Presidential veto, which will ensure that the deal goes into effect even without any support from the Republicans, according to The New York Times.

The deal forces Iran to live under nuclear restrictions for the next 10 years, preventing them from creating weapons. The U.S., European Union and U.N. will lift sanctions from Iran in exchange. This will give international inspectors access to nuclear facilities in Iran, so they can ensure that the country continues to maintain the deal.

As of Tuesday, there were four Democratic senators who do not support the Iran Nuclear Deal. Joe Manchin (W.V.) was the most recent to announce his opposition, according to CNN.
