The high-profile murder case of Sheena Bora, the daughter of India's first female TV mogul, Indrani Mukerjea, has gripped the country's attention recently. From the surface, the case has all the right elements that make a riveting crime story: a young beautiful victim, a police investigation that might be flawed, and most of all, a suspect that fits the bill as the ideal villain for the crime.
The facts of the case are quite straightforward, with Indrani Mukerjea being jailed for the murder of her daughter three years ago. Her daughter's remains have been found by police during the initial investigation, though positive identification of bone fragments have been initiated only recently.
Police have also announced that two accomplices to the crime have already confessed. However, the alleged confessions have not been fully confirmed. Behind bars, Mukerjea continues to maintain her innocence, stating that her daughter had gone to the U.S. to study, and then disappeared, reports The Guardian.
The coverage of the case in India has been nothing short of theatrical, with crime reporters flocking around every detail of the case. Not long after the public's interest was rekindled, numerous portraits of Mukerjea have emerged, with most articles painting her as a social-climbing, adulterous, overly-ambitious seductress.
India's media has even given her a number of monikers, from the "Gone Girl of India," to the "Great Gatsby of Mumbai." In the Aug. 28 edition of one national newspaper, 12 articles were published on the prolific case, according to The New York Times.
With the media firestorm raging across the country, it would be nigh impossible for Mukerjea to undo the damage the case has caused her reputation, even if she were to be proven innocent in court.
