John Stamos reached a rough point in his life this past year when he got arrested for a DUI, only to check into rehab for substance abuse a few weeks later.
Now that he's been out of rehab for almost two months, he's finally opened up about how the month-long experience made him a better person.
"I've had a rough year with my mom dying, so it call came to head, and it was a turning point," he told Details in a recent interview. "You either continue on that path-and some of it's fun, but a lot of it's not-or there's this other thing, this golden opportunity sitting there with all this work and all this goodwill that you have going for you. That's the key. I feel better than I've felt in a decade."
His mother, Loretta Phillips Stamos, passed away around this time last year. At the time, he posted a photo of the two to Instagram with an emotional caption.
"The love of my life passed away yesterday..." he wrote. While this, plus everything else, has been hard on him, he's done his best to come back better than ever before.
The 52-year-old "Full House" star went on to explain that he's always had a hard time acting his own age.
"I'm trying. I swear to God I'm trying," he said when asked if he's still struggling with maturity. "It's not as much fun, but you have to be responsible. It's about discipline, which I lost for a while." After barely working for "five or six years" and not having much going on besides a few commercials and guest appearances, he admits that there was "a lot of downtime. And that can be, obviously, dangerous," he explained.
With his highly anticipated show "Grandfathered" premiering next week, he's finally found a project to keep him busy and out of trouble.
"I can't wait to get to work in the morning," he told Entertainment Weekly, according to People. "I haven't felt this in a long time. I feel better than I've felt in a decade. And I hope people see that. That's what I want them to see."
Watch Stamos in "Grandfathered" alongside Josh Peck when it premieres September 29 on FOX.
