Jon Hamm is finally an Emmy-Award winner after being nominated eight times for his role as Don Draper on AMC's "Mad Men." Hamm won the Emmy Award for Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday.
The 44-year-old skipped the stairs and, instead, climbed on stage to accept his award, presented to him by actress and comedian Tina Fey. Fittingly, Hamm received a standing ovation on his way onto the stage.
"There has been a terrible mistake, clearly. Thank you for that," he said. "This is impossible. It's impossible to be named with all of those extraordinary gentlemen. It is impossible to be standing up here. It's impossible to have done this show, with this incredible cast, these incredible people, these incredible writers, our incredible crew. The network and studio who put this on, Lionsgate and AMC.
"It's incredible and impossible for me personally to be standing here, so I want to thank the people to whom I owe an incredible debt, people who in my life have gotten me here. Families who have for some reason chosen to take me in, to be nice to me..."
During his acceptance speech, the actor thanked varies people including his ex-girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt, whom he recently split from after 18 years of dating. He also thanked his dog, Cora.
"Thank you all very much. I would not be standing here without you," Hamm added. "Thank you to everyone who watched the show, thank you for this."
Hamm has previously lost to other actors including Kyle Chandler, Damian Lewis, Jeff Daniels and Bryan Cranston. He has also been nominated eight other times in varies categories, including "Best Drama Series" since he was also a producer on "Mad Man." After seven seasons, "Mad Man" aired its final season earlier this year.
Hamm told E! News backstage at the 2015 Emmys that he wasn't expecting to win and mainly attended the award show to spend time with friends and have a good time.
"It's not my first time around the briar patch here," Hamm said, following his win. "I was not expecting anything other than to try and have a nice night and see some friends and hopefully some friends win and I would say 'hooray' but I got to say 'hooray' for me, so that was nice. It's an incredible night, unexpected, but nice."
As for why he choose to climb on stage instead of taking the stairs, Hamm said, "Well, that was just stupid! It seemed like the shortest distance between two points is a straight line and I was sitting right there and Tina said my name and usually when she says my name, I have to come running."
