The Dallas Cowboys are searching for quarterbacks after Tony Romo broke his collarbone Sunday, and names like Christian Ponder, Matt Flynn, Josh Johnson, and McLeod Bethel-Thompson are reportedly expected to work out at Valley Ranch Tuesday, according to Charean Williams of star-telegram.com.
Ponder seems to likely be the leading candidate for the job, as he is a former first round draft pick in 2011. Ponder has only played four seasons in the league, but proved he could make it on a NFL roster with his time in Minnesota.
In his first two years with the Vikings, Ponder threw 31 touchdowns to 25 interceptions. While those are not ideal first round quarterback numbers, it proves he can likely fill the spot behind back up Brandon Weeden.
Matt Flynn seems like another fit for Dallas. Flynn has proven he can play on this level, as back in 2013 filling in for Aaron Rodgers he threw for 1,146 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions in five games.
Flynn is a legitimate backup for any team, but would likely be a great fit as a third string quarterback behind Weeden. He has moved around the league and played on three different teams, showing he can pick up a new offense quickly if needed.
Josh Johnson and McLeod Bethel-Thompson will also both work out for the Cowboys Tuesday.
Johnson has experience in the NFL, but hasn't performed to well with five touchdowns and 10 interceptions in four seasons in the league. Johnson is a quarterback that can move the ball on the ground though as he does average 6.2 yards per carry.
Bethel-Thompson is out Sacramento State, but has no experience starting in the league, and has bounced around from NFL to Arena to the United Football League. It will be interesting if the Cowboys bring in either of these two, because they don't have as much experience as the players mentioned before.
The Cowboys are likely looking as a safety precaution, and it is likely a smart plan because there is no quarterback on the 53-man roster to step in if Weeden goes down.
The Cowboys do have Kellen Moore and Jameill Showers on their practice squad, and Moore could still get bumped to the active roster, according to CBS Sports. The Cowboys seem to be looking for someone with experience though, because if they were sold on their practice squad quarterbacks they would likely not be looking.
