The hits keep coming for the Dallas Cowboys. After losing star wide receiver Dez Bryant and quarterback Tony Romo to injury, the team may also be without longtime tight end Jason Witten when they square off against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. ESPN's Ed Werder, citing NFL sources, indicates that Witten isn't certain to suit up against Dan Quinn's Falcons this weekend.
"[Witten] will be day-to-day all week, but he's not a lock [to play] at this point," a source told Werder.
Witten is currently receiving treatement for two sprained ankles and a sprained knee suffered during the Cowboys 20-10 thrashing of NFC East rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, this past weekend. It was also the game in which Romo was lost after an Eagle linebacker fell hard on the signal-caller following a sack.
Witten, 33, is in his thirteenth season in the league. He's currently riding a streak of 133 consecutive starts, which ranks first among the NFL's tight ends. Witten is known for his ability to play through pain - he only missed one game as a young pro when he broke his jaw and he fought past a ruptured spleen to take the first snaps of the season in 2012.
With Romo and Bryant already on the shelf, the road in Dallas has gotten much, much bumpier. If Witten misses this week or any more time thereafter, the Cowboys hopes of repeating as playoff entrants may be slipping slowly away. Assuming they haven't already, despite their 2-0 record.
