The Miami Dolphins could see some changes in their coaching staff if they don't pull out a win against the New York Jets in London, according to NFL reporter Rand Getlin.
"If the team loses three in a row, don't be shocked if someone on that coaching staff gets fired," one of Getlin's "well-placed" sources informed him. It's almost shocking this is happening in Miami, but then again the Dolphins have only made the playoffs once since 2002.
The Dolphins were supposed be on the verge of turning this program around. Last season they went 8-8 and showed promise for the future. The Dolphins signed Ryan Tannehill to a contract extension through 2020, but his play on the field has been erratic. He has thrown for 882 yards with five touchdowns this season, but he also has three interceptions and three fumbles.
On defense the Dolphins brought in powerhouse defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh, who was considered one of the NFL's top free agents this offseason. Since arriving in Miami, Suh has seven combined tackles and no sacks.
The Dolphins are in last place in the AFC East, but a win this weekend against the Jets could be a huge turning point for this team. The Dolphins have the talent, so it only makes sense that the blame will come down on the coaching staff.
The Dolphins are 26th in the league in terms of yards allowed per game on defense, and 19th in the league in terms of yards gained on offense. These numbers will need to improve if Miami wants to make a push for the playoffs. The Dolphins have problems on both offense and defense, showing that any coach could be at risk if the they lose a third straight.
Head coach Joe Philbin may not be on the chopping block this week, but if he posts a losing record this season he may be on his way out in Miami. Philbin has a 24-27 record in three-plus seasons with the Dolphins, and the organization and owner Stephen Ross are likely sick of losing.
