Arsenal need a win, especially after their 3-2 defeat in UEFA Champions League play to Olympiacos last week. The defeat came as a shock to Gunners fans, but most of the loss is being blamed on goalkeeper David Ospina. His poor performance caused Arsenal to fall to 0-2 in group play. There is a sense of desperation around the Emirates Stadium this weekend and if another loss ensues, the whispers of firing manager Arsene Wenger will grow to shouts.
In league play, the Gunners last result was a 5-2 beat down of Leicester City, thanks to a hat-trick performance by Alexis Sanchez. City came into the match riding high and proved to the Premier League that there was a new team in town. However, thanks to Arsenal's dominating performance, the tides have turned. Leicester sit in fourth place in the league table, but with a win against United, Arsenal would leapfrog right over City. The leading scorer for Arsenal is Oliver Giroud with three goals.
United come into the match in a much different form than their opponent. Following a come-from-behind victory in Champions Leauge play against Wolfsburg, where United won 2-1, the club has shown no signs of slowing down. The Red Devils are enjoying a wonderful run of form and have not lost in league play since August 30. Juan Mata leads the club in scoring with three goals.
The last time these two sides met was back on March 9th in the FA Cup semifinals. Arsenal captured a 2-1 victory thanks to a winning goal from Danny Welbeck. Since that time, the two clubs have gone in different directions, both in international and domestic play. United spent most of the off-season working on signing new players to bolster the roster while Arsenal only signed one player, Petr Cech. Man United obviously hold a larger bank account than the Gunners, however, there was plenty of funds available to be spent. Still, Wenger and company could not pull the trigger on anyone.
Arsenal is the underdog going into Sunday's match and know that falling behind early is not an option. If United get Wayne Rooney and Mata going soon after opening kick, there is no coming back for the Gunners.
