A hiker who was walking his Doberman Pinscher was found killed by "multiple gunshot wounds," according to the Marin County Sheriff's Office. Detectives of the case have been actively searching for the possible suspect since they found the victim on the known Fairfax trail, NBC Bay Area reported.
Lt. Doug Pittman said in a news conference Tuesday that the sheriff's office received a 911 call that reported a body found at the Sir Francis Drake Boulevard located on Old Railroad Grade Trail in Loma Alta Open Space Preserve around 6 p.m. The victim was just staying with friends who live in Marin County.
The victim, 67-year-old Steve Carter, was walking his dog when he got shot. The dog was also shot, but it was able to survive. There were three persons of interest seen on the surveillance footage that the authorities want to question. A footage from a Fairfax convenience store shows two of the three people they were looking for: a man with long hair wearing a black hat and a dirty-blonde haired woman who was wearing something dark at the time, Journal Star reported.
"Steve was one of the most gentle, kind, sweet and funny men I have ever known," said Terri Zacanti, an old friend of Carter, San Francisco Gate reported. "He's all about love, this guy. He was the most loving, beautiful man you can imagine. This is such a violent waste - an absolute incredible tragedy."
Carter and his wife Lokita already built their dream home in Costa Rica but moved back into California so Lokita could receive treatment for breast cancer. Carter was a known tantra teacher and massage therapist and was only staying in the area during his wife's treatment.
