Two separate shark attacks occurred on the same day off the Hawaiian island of Oahu, according to CNN. This brings the number of shark attacks in Hawaii to seven so far this year.
A 44-year-old man was swimming with a friend Saturday morning between the small island of Mokulua and Lanikai Beach, which is on the windward side of Oahu, when a shark attacked him, said Shayne Enrght, Honolulu Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman. They were only about 50 to 100 yards off shore when the attack occurred. Several kayakers came to his rescue, bringing him ashore and calling for help. He is listed in critical condition with severe injuries to his feet.
"We heard there was a shark attack, so I ran over there to see if I could help," said witness Dr. Brian Jones, according to Surfer. "At that point, they were pulling him out of the water and you could see what the shark did. He was missing the bottom half of his left leg and the right leg was just barely hanging on."
"According to witnesses, the shark was a 10 foot tiger shark," said Honolulu Emergency Services.
In a separate attack, a 33-year-old man swimming Saturday evening off the popular tourist area of Waikiki was attacked and bitten on his left foot. He was hospitalized and is in serious condition.
Honolulu Emergency Services updated its statement today, according to ABC News, denying the shark attack in Waikiki: "On further investigation, the injuries sustained by the patient in Waikiki are consistent with an eel bite."
