Across America, a new bizarre sport is gaining a following. It's part competitive sport and part talent show — it's called Air Sex.
The idea behind Air Sex is actually quite simple. If you're familiar with air guitar, it's works in a similar way. Fully-clothed competitors simulate having sex with an imaginary partner in front of a crowd and a set of judges. The person with the best simulation wins prizes and bragging rights. Judges consist of porn stars and comedians, according to First To Know.
Air Sex is believed to have originated in Japan, according to Mirror. In some cases, the competitors "perform" the act with appropriate background music.
In the United States, competitions are held year round. Some cities — Atlanta, Philadelphia and D.C. — have already declared a winner for 2015. A national competition is set to happen in December, according to Air Sex World.
"Athletic competition is what makes the United States the greatest country in the history of the universe," said former Air Sex champion Tootnanny via Red And Black. "Deep down, we all have a fight in us, and sports like Air Sex allow us to release that energy in a sex-positive, gender-positive, judgment-free, competitive and healthy environment."
Comedian and competition host Trew, who has been part of the Air Sex tour for more than seven years, explained that the concept is actually a comedy show and not pornography. "The show is built to be funny and entertaining," he said, according to Philly. He and some friends mounted the first Air Sex competition in America eight years ago, according to Dcist.
"It went so well, we did more," he said. "As a full-time comedian, I'm always looking for something I can ride, so I'm very lucky."
Trew also stars in the documentary "Air Sex: The Movie," which showcases just exactly what happens during the competitions.
