A few months ago, rapper Pusha T received a call from Kanye West that would change his life forever. West, who is the founder of Def Jam's label G.O.O.D Music Inc., asked the 38-year-old rapper what his thoughts on being the president of the label were, and now, four months later, he has officially been given that title.
He will be joined by his longtime manager Steven Victor as a way to help West "manicure the label and make it profitable," he told Billboard.
"I always look at it as an opportunity to help the team and I think that artistically, me and Kanye have the same vision. He respects me as an artist, a really manicured artist," he continued to say on West's decision to choose him as president. "When it comes to albums and things like that, I have a very manicured process in which I get to take my time and I think he sort of respects that I get to take my time...He just notices me and him don't ever have that type of pressure, tension, producer-artist relationship. I think he respects me a lot and not to mention, ever since I've been on G.O.O.D Music, there's been a host of artists that I've brought to the table, tried to sign, brought his attention in trying to sign."
Pusha T also explained that this new position won't affect his long-awaited sophomore album "King Push" in any way. The album does not yet have a set release date, but he promises that we'll be "seeing that very shortly."
"My album is just a whole other thing in all honesty," he said of his own musical output. "For real, what you're gonna get from this 'King Push' album is something people probably haven't heard in the past 18 years. I'm just putting it together, aiming for classic material."
As for what he plans to bring to the label, he has high hopes for the artists. "I just look at capitalizing on everything that I feel like G.O.O.D Music brings to the music industry, our following, and the culture. First of all, we have incredible artists. It's definitely about getting those albums out in a very manicured fashion," he explained, adding that he's not celebrating the new position just yet.
"It's all about work right now. We got so much to celebrate for every day. This is just about executing for me right now. I don't wanna celebrate til we see some real progress and really, just make things happen," he added. "Just be on the lookout for everything from G.O.O.D Music and we just about to really take over and show we're a force in the music game and this culture in general. It's an artistic bunch over here."
West launched G.O.O.D music back in 2004 after the release of his first album, "The College Dropout," and ever since, the label has taken on several hit artists like John Legend, Common, Big Sean, Kid Cudi, and 2 Chainz, according to BET. Pusha T will work towards helping this house West built get even better.
