Newborn Found Buried Alive Rescued In Compton, Police Searching For Mother

A newborn baby rescued in Compton has Los Angeles County sheriff officials asking the public's help in finding out who buried the 1-day-old infant on a popular Compton bike path, according to Townhall. The newborn girl was found near a creek flowing into the Los Angeles River and was taken to the hospital, where she is listed in stable condition.

"There's indication that the child was born at a medical facility or a hospital," said Sgt. Marvin Jaramilla of the Sheriff's Department's special victim unit.

Deputies found the newborn late Friday afternoon after several calls came in from people biking on the path who had heard her cries..

"As they searched, deputies heard a baby's muffled cry and located a newborn baby girl buried alive under pieces of asphalt and rubble inside a crevice located along the bike path," Jaramilla said, adding that the baby was cold to the touch when found, even though it was wrapped in a blanket, according to The Guardian.

"Some parents of newborns can find themselves in difficult circumstances," Jaramilla said. "Sadly, babies are sometimes harmed or abandoned by parents who feel that they're not ready or able to raise a child."

The Safe Surrender program allows for a newborn to be dropped off at any hospital or fire house within 72 hours of birth, CBS Los Angeles reported.

"A parent stuck in this difficult situation can safely surrender their baby at any hospital or fire station in Los Angeles County, no questions asked," Jaramilla advised.
