Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott could be a target for the San Diego Chargers head-coaching position next season, and the Chargers reportedly would like to pair their current head coach Mike McCoy as an offensive coordinator with McDermott, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.
McDermott and Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin are reportedly expected to be two top coaching candidates this upcoming offseason, according to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport. The Panthers defense is currently ranked third in the NFL in terms of yards per game, and McDermott has his defense playing their best football down the stretch of this season.
The Panthers dominated the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving this past week and recorded three interceptions in the first half. The Panthers improved to 11-0 on Thursday and look to be one of the frontrunners in the NFC playoff picture.
McDermott and McCoy have worked together previously in the Panthers organization, and keeping an offensive-minded coach like McCoy could make a strong combination with McDermott. The Chargers are currently 3-8 on the season, and they snapped their six game losing streak with a win over the Jaguars 31-25.
The Chargers are expected to apply for relocation in Los Angeles this upcoming January and could be looking at top draft pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. The Chargers were expected to compete for the postseason in the AFC West, and a coaching change could be coming at the end of this season.
