Ahead of its December release, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will be launching a series of virtual reality-based teasers. Fans will be delighted to know that several Star Wars-themed Google Cardboard VR viewers are being given out for free. Unfortunately, this is available at Verizon's retail outlets and only offered to its paying customers.
There are four headset variants available and these are designed around Kylo Ren, R2-D2, and BB-8 characters, while the fourth is inspired by a Stormtrooper helmet. Verizon reportedly has 200,000 of these in stock across its stores throughout the U.S. It is expected to last for a couple of weeks, a Verizon spokesperson told The Verge.
The VR viewer can be used to view a content called "Jakku Spy" available in the Star Wars app on both iOS and Android platforms. This is a VR experience that lets the viewer assume the role of a Resistance secret agent on the desert world, Jakku. Using Google Cardboard, the viewer is plunged into an incredible virtual reality that follows a narrative that will be released in installments.
"We think a lot of people are going to get to experience virtual reality in Google Cardboard for the first time with Jakku Spy," Rob Bredow, head of New Media at Lucasfilm, said in an official statement. "It's a great opportunity because there's this familiar content - characters and vehicles that you've seen in trailers - but you're seeing it in a completely new way."
