'Bad Grandpa' Movie Reviews: Johnny Knoxville Revives 'Jackass' Franchise With An 'Actual' Film? (TRAILER)

"Jackass" fans will have spoken. More than 80 percent of moviegoers loved the Johnny Knoxville's "Bad Grandpa," according to RottenTomatoes.com.

"Bad Grandpa" is a movie about 86-year-old Irving Zisman (Knoxville) as he travels across the United States with his 8-year-old Grandson Billy (Jackson Nicoll) on a hidden camera road trip. The characters will interact with anyone from male strippers to funeral mourners to cause havoc and make unsuspecting citizens very uncomfortable.

The Good: The Los Angeles Times calls it an "actual film."

"'Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa'" is an evolution. The film has a story complete with a beginning, middle and end. It has some acting and emotion. And most shocking of all - it has empathy. Which may make hard-core "Jackass" fans - the highly coveted young adult male demo that throws good money at bad entertainment all the time - shudder."

The Bad: The Washington Post says the film doesn't compare to earlier films

"Bad Grandpa" isn't as sustained a piece of work as the earlier "Jackass" pics, and it can even seem tame in light of the more outrageous bits in "Borat" and "Bruno" - perhaps a sign that Knoxville et al. are ever so slightly maturing. Too much of the film gets bogged down in Irving making lewd passes at uninterested younger women (and one possibly interested drive-thru attendant), but even at its low ebb, the movie effuses an infectious, mischief-making joy.

The Audience: what RottenTomatoes.com users had to say about the flick

"'Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa' is the first story driven Jackass film, now, you might ask: Does it work? Do the guys pull it off? You might be surprised but yes. Given that Jackass movies were all about the stunts and the pranks, this new approach, taking the franchise into a new direction with the character development, the story actually is a perfect idea. This time it's not all about the jokes, it talks about a serious issue in our society, but the film itself doesn't want to take it too serious," Marijus Pikelis said, RottenTomatoes.com user.

"Raunchy and funny..., in that order. Unfortunately, the story is not consistent and neither is the humor. Shot in Lincoln, NE, Kansas City, St. Louis, and more on the road trip to North Carolina, I will admit that there were some incredibly funny moments. If the Jackass type films are your speed, you'll probably love this one as well. I cant recommend going out to see it in the theater, but worth a rental when it comes out," Michael Minton said, RottenTomatoes.com user.
