Like the SAG Awards, the Golden Globe Awards are often seen as a stepping stone to the main even of awards season: the Academy Awards. While the Oscars only concentrate on films, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association honors the highest achievements in both film and television. The Golden Globes also split the film an acting category into two: comedy and drama.
The nominations were announced early Thursday morning by Angela Bassett, Chloe Grace Moretz, Dennis Quaid and America Ferrera in Los Angeles. Leading the way in the film category was "Carol," a 1950's-set romance that scored five nominations overall, including best picture and two best actress nominees for stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. "The Big Short," "The Revenant" and "Steve Jobs" were all close behind with four nominations each, but the biggest surprise of the morning went to the summer blockbuster "Mad Max: Fury Road," which earned a best picture-drama nomination as well as a best director nod for George Miller, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Streaming websites ruled in the television categories, with Netflix earning the most nominations with eight, followed closely behind HBO with seven nominations, Starz with six and Amazon and FX with five each. The television series were more evenly matched, as "American Crime," "Fargo," "Mr. Robot," "Outlander," "Transparent" and "Wolf Hall" all tied with three nominations.
There were a couple of surprises in the television categories as well as the film ones. Lady Gaga earned her first-ever acting nomination for best actress for her role in "American Horror Story: Hotel" and Rachel Bloom of The CW's "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" earned one as well.
The Golden Globe Awards will be hosted by Ricky Gervais and will air Jan. 10 on NBC.
