Gunman Killed At Pa. Wal-Mart After Threatening Customers

A man was shot and killed at a Wal-Mart in East Stroudsbourg, Pa., after brandishing multiple handguns at customers and authorities, according to CNN.

Police were called to the store on Saturday night after 20-year-old Andrew Joseph Todd, of Mount Bethel, entered the store and started threatening customers and pointing his weapons at them, according to ABC News. State police say that Todd refused to drop his weapons when asked by police and continued to aim firearms toward officers, according to ABC News. Officers consequently shot Todd, who was killed by a hit to the upper chest, according to ABC News.

Officers performed first aid on Todd until an ambulance arrived and he was taken to the Pocono Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, according to The Pocono Record.

Jeff Strunk, deputy director of the Monroe Country 911 Center, said that it was not clear who shot the man but that the authorities were still investigating, according to WPTV.

Bystanders who had been doing their Christmas shopping at the time said that they had not initially registered Todd as dangerous, according to The Pocono Record.

"I did not believe he was a threat, I turned away and dismissed him," witness John Bruno told the newspaper, describing how he and his wife had assumed Todd was joking around with toy guns sold in Wal-Mart.

Bruno and his wife Jessica proceeded to leave the store as quickly as possible once they understood that the gunman was serious, according to The Pocono Record.

Todd was reportedly carrying two firearms and a machete, according to ABC News.

Walmart spokesman Randy Hargrove said that he was not aware of any injuries sustained by any employees or customers present during the shooting and that the store reopened the next day as normal, according to WPTV.
