An adorable koala was saved by firefighters on Dec. 27 when he was found unconscious in the town of Lorne in the Australian province of Victoria. He is doing well, and his new friends named him "Constable K. Bear."
The Christmas Day bushfires that have been sweeping the Australian state of Victoria have destroyed more than 100 homes, and the fires continue to rage on. Many people have made it back into their homes only to find devastating damage, as reported by HNGN. Luckily, Victoria officials have been working nonstop to deal with the damage and find survivors, both human and otherwise, reported The Daily Mail.
One of these lucky survivors was our star, the koala named Constable K. Bear. He was found unresponsive and taken immediately to a police station where he was hand fed some water and gum leaves and then nursed back to health.
Right now, no one is allowed to enter the damaged, burning areas because the situation is not yet fully under control. "They're going to be setting up a triage centre in Lorne, and vets from Parks Victoria and the Department of Environment will be attending to the animals at the site... After treatment, the animals will be transported to us to come in to care," said Shelley Hyndman from the Surf Coast Wildlife Shelters Group, reported RT.
It's important for all people to keep a lookout for animals that look "off" because they may be suffering from smoke inhalation or burnt paw pads, said Amy Hidge of Victoria Wildlife, according to The Daily Mail. Though finding animals isn't the state's top priority right now, any person who sees an animal in distress can call Victoria Wildlife and it will take care of the animal.
