California Black Bear Hitches Ride On Garbage Truck For 65 Miles

A black bear in California hitched a ride on a garbage truck Dec. 22 for 65 miles on a journey that ended at a dump near Fresno, reported WKRN. The adventurous bear was probably lured by the delicious garbage and wanted an early Christmas feast.

The bear climbed into a trash compactor that was later picked up by a disposal truck around Hume Lake. The truck rode along with the bear in the compactor until it arrived at its smelly destination, reported the Associated Press. Apparently, he was sleeping or rummaging through the trash the whole way there.

The garbage collectors noticed the bear only when they arrived at the dump, and he was set free from the truck. Animal control was called to tranquilize and contain the crafty bear. No one was injured, luckily, and the bear was released back to Hume Lake unharmed.

The most common type of bear found in America, the black bear is usually very shaggy and weighs between 150 and 300 pounds, said Nature Mapping Foundation. They can be very fast runners and, apparently, also don't mind taking casual truck rides.
