The ladies of TNT's "Rizzoli & Isles" are hanging up their crime solving hats, according to TVLine.com. On Thursday, Turner Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Kevin Reilly announced at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Calif., that the upcoming seventh season of "Rizzoli & Isles" will be its last.
"I think both ladies have had a really satisfying experience," said Reilly, according to Entertainment Weekly. "I don't know that they wouldn't do anymore, but I think they felt very comfortable that it's had a good run. It felt like it was time. Everyone said, 'Let's go out and finish 13 great ones and call it a day.'"
In July, the long-running drama series - starring Angie Harmon as Detective Jane Rizzoli and Sasha Alexander as medical examiner Dr. Maura Isles - was picked up for a shortened 13-episode seventh season. The show is based on Tess Gerritsen's novels.
The series premiered in 2010 and, despite the show being one of TNT's most popular programs, the sixth season only averaged 11.1 million viewers across all platforms, according to Entertainment Weekly.
"'Rizzoli & Isles' hit a cord with audiences the moment it aired, which is unusual and special," Alexander told Variety. "And it has remained so for almost seven seasons thanks to the passionate commitment of our amazing fans. In this world, that's a huge success. I believe we have two eyes so one can look back to the past as the other turns its gaze to the future. As 'R&I' comes to a close, I am deeply grateful and inspired by the work we have done and the friendships we have forged, but also am excited to see what the future will hold."
Earlier this week, Alexander won the People's Choice Award for Favorite Cable TV Actress. The same award was given to Harmon last year. The cancellation news comes after TNT pulled the plug on several series, including "Public Morals," "Agent X" and "Legends."
The 13-episode seventh season of "Rizzoli & Isles" will air this summer on TNT.
