When it comes to the Avengers, perhaps no other character is as underutilized as Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanova AKA Black Widow. The mega Marvel franchise has rendered her somewhat useless outside of flirting with teammates and it's a real shame given her character's interesting backstory and Johansson's talents as an actress. However, "Captain America: Civil War" directors Joe and Anthony Russo (who will also be taking over for the "Avengers: Infinity War" series) said they would be interested in doing a Black Widow solo film.
Joe Russo: "Hell yeah! We love that character."
Anthony Russo: "And we love Scarlett."
Joe Russo: "We find that the character is one of if not the richest character in the Marvel universe. A very complex character, haunted by demons and her understanding of the world is fascinating. I think there is a lot that can be done with that character."
You can check out the Russos' full comments in the video below.
To date, the only members of the original Avengers squad not to receive their own standalone films are Black Widow and Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye. Though both received more attention in "Avengers: Age of Ultron," there is still a lot of character ground that can be covered.
Johansson's Black Widow will next pop up in May's "Captain America: Civil War." Alongside Chris Evans' Steve Rogers/Captain America, Black Widow will be leading a new team of Avengers to keep Earth safe. However, following a catastrophic event that results in civilian deaths, the governments of the world unite to try and control the Avengers. The new system creates a schism within the team; one half, led by Rogers, believes the government is overstepping its bounds while the other half, led by Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark/Iron Man, believes the super powered team needs to be held accountable for their actions. Which side will you support?
"Civil War" will hit theaters on May 6.
