The family of late music icon David Bowie released its first statement since the singer's death, posted to Bowie's official Facebook page. In the statement, Bowie's loved ones thanked fans for their "love" and "support" since Bowie's death was announced on Sunday, and they provided details of their plans to pay tribute to his life and music career.
"THANK YOU," the Facebook statement read. "The family of David Bowie is currently making arrangements for a private ceremony celebrating the memory of their beloved husband, father and friend. They ask once again that their privacy be respected at this most sensitive of times. We are overwhelmed by and grateful for the love and support shown throughout the world."
They went on to note that while they are appreciative of the upcoming tribute concerts scheduled in Bowie's honor, they stressed that they have not had any role in organizing them and have not endorsed them.
Tony Visconti, Bowie's longtime producer, held a tribute to the late icon on Tuesday at Toronto's Opera House, the BBC reported. Another tribute concert featuring performances by Cyndi Lauper, The Mountain Goats and The Roots is scheduled for March 31 at Carnegie Hall in New York City, according to Entertainment Weekly.
"Just as each and every one of us found something unique in David's music, we welcome everyone's celebration of his life as they see fit," Bowie's family wrote in the statement.
Bowie passed away on Sunday, Jan. 10 after an 18-month-long battle with cancer, as previously reported by HNGN. Fans and celebrities have mourned his death and paid tribute to the singer and his legacy on social media.
