The shooter is believed to be in Building 26 and there are no immediate reports of casualties. The facility itself has staff comprised of more than 6,500 military, civilian, contractor and volunteer personnel, reported NBC San Diego. Personnel there are typically deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Djibouti and the aboard the USNS Mercy.
In the meantime, due to their proximity to the site of the reported shooting, San Diego High School, Garfield High School and Roosevelt Middle School have all been locked down, reported FOX 5 San Diego.
"Parents should be reassured that their kids are safe and we are monitoring the situation closely," said NMCSD spokeswoman Linda Zintz, noting that parents should remain at home as to not create a chaotic situation outside the schools.
It's unclear how many people were inside the building at the time of the shooting.
