Yes, you read that headline right. McDonald's has been incorporating kale into some of their menu items, hopping onto the latest "miracle food" fad, but the nutritional value of these items leave quite a bit to be desired, reported Take Part, who found that the company;s kale caesar salad has more calories and fat than a Big Mac.
A Big Mac contains pieces of bread, hamburger patties, cheese, and "special sauce," which is mayo-based. The kale caesar salad comes with parmesan shreds and a "lettuce blend that includes baby kale," topped with asiago dressing and the option for grilled or fried chicken, reported CBC.
When you go with the fried chicken option, your "salad," "light meal," or "healthy option," as its referred to totals 730 calories and 53 grams of fat, reported Tech Times. It also has 1400mg of sodium.
The salad contains three quarters of the fat that the average adult should consume in a day, according to My Daily Intake.
A Big Mac, by comparison, is cleaner eating! It comes to 680 calories, 38 grams of fat, and 1340 mg of sodium. Because it's got more protein and carbohydrates than the salad, you're more likely to feel fuller for longer.
This isn't to say, of course, that a cheeseburger can seriously be called health food, but neither can McDonald's kale caesar salad.
Bottom line: if there's fried chicken in it, it's no longer lighter fare.
