Three-plus months later and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is firmly in the rearview mirror which means "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is now the hot topic of conversation. Over the last few weeks we've heard a few different rumors that caught our attention regarding the characters and story of "Rogue One." Today comes a new whisper about one of the lesser known members of the cast.
Chinese actor Jiang Wen will be in "Rogue One," and if Making Star Wars is to be believed, his character is a complete and utter badass.
"I've learned that Wen's character is the weapons enthusiast of the group," wrote Jason Ward, MSW's editor-in-chief. "He's a first-class gun nut. He's the kind of character that just as you think he's exhausted his potential for violence, he pulls another weapon out of his boot (for example). He probably has as many concealed weapons as he does overtly visible ones (if not more)."
Sure, other action movies employ a self-proclaimed gun nut character. But the "Star Wars" universe has yet to see anyone quite like that. If true, the prop department could have a lot of fun coming up with cool new weapons for Wen's character to play with.
This rumor makes sense based on previous details we've heard about Wen's character. It was first reported that Wen's character was a bounty hunter with Rebel sympathies. That would make his obsession with weapons much more believable. What bounty hunter worth his salt doesn't have a secret cache of lethal forces?
Wen is well-known in China so his addition to the cast should help play to cinema's second-most important market behind the United States. That has to be high on the list of priorities after "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" disappointed at the box office in China. Based on these rumors, it sounds like Wen's character will be one of the most entertaining.
"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" will hit theaters on Dec. 16, 2016.
